RB Leipzig's poor performance after the international break (two draws and a defeat) adds motivation for the team in their home encounter with FC Augsburg. The Bavarian side failed to clinch a win against Mainz 05 (2:3) last Friday despite having a numerical advantage and plenty of chances.
This season, RB Leipzig surprised the football world with a victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Leverkusen (3:2), where they showcased their full potential. In other matches, the team often faced problems due to underestimating their opponents – the key players took to the field without full concentration. Interestingly, in terms of xPTS, RB Leipzig are near the bottom of the table (3.87 with 8 points), so the coach will need to prove that lessons have been learned.
In the opening month and a half of the season, FC Augsburg have demonstrated that they deliver excitement in German football (five consecutive matches with over 2.5 goals). At home against Mainz 05, the Bavarian side generated 2.53 xG and had a staggering shot differential (30-5). It seems Augsburg are adjusting to changes in the squad following the sale of their leader Arne Engels, and in place of the suspended forward Samuel Essende, Phillip Tietz will start, having already scored in the Bundesliga this season.
Since the 2019/20 season, the total over 2.5 has been achieved in nine of the eleven head-to-head meetings between RB Leipzig and FC Augsburg. RB Leipzig will need to take risks to close the gap with their competitors, while FC Augsburg will likely insist on open football as usual.
